Avans Hogescholen, Fontys Hogeschool ICT and the company ICT (ICT Automatisering Nederland B.V.) join the already existing consortium of collaborating partners from industry and education, which is working together to develop a new football robot called TURTLE5k.

The consortium was started in 2012 by ACE engineering & consultancy firm, VEDS Group and Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) to develop an affordable football robot. Avans Hogescholen and Fontys Hogeschool ICT will further integrate the football robot into their ICT and Mechatronics courses in the coming years. The company ICT is supervising the software development.

Frank Steeghs, Project Manager TURTLE-5k, ACE engineering & consultancy: "The intention is to participate with this new robot in the international competition RoboCup, the most prominent and largest competition for intelligent robots and one of the world's most important technology events for research and education. Worldwide, several universities and colleges participate in this highly challenging competition. With the entry of the new partners, undergraduate students can now also contribute greatly to this project."

The intention is to participate with this new robot in the international competition RoboCup, the most prominent and largest competition for intelligent robots and one of the world's most important technology events for research and education.

The students will ensure that the TURTLE5 robot will soon be able to move around the playing field in a fast and elegant way and that the robot can take penalties. The ultimate ambition of the project is to really teach a team of robots to play football in the coming years.

Since 1997, the RoboCup Federation has been striving to develop intelligent robotic footballers, who should be able to beat current human FIFA champions by 2050. Collaborations between education and industry add great value to the quality of education. Students get the chance to interact with industry through a challenging project and industry can make use of new ideas and up-to-date knowledge.
