Hans Spanjersberg, General Manager ICT
Hans started out as a summer intern in ECT’s operational department back in 1979. He was attending secondary school at the time and had enrolled in a teacher training course, but he discovered that his heart wasn’t in it at all. Having a job seemed more appealing to him, so once summer was over he ended up sticking around.
When he found himself looking for a career change during those first few years, he entered university after taking the formal entrance examination, studying Sociology in Rotterdam, followed by Industrial Engineering and Computer Science at the Technical Universities of Eindhoven and Delft, respectively.
After working on the wharf and operating cranes for some time, he joined the company’s ICT department in 1999, and since 2008 he has been in charge of ICT as General Manager of Hutchison Ports ECT Rotterdam. In addition, he is responsible for the IT of all business units of Hutchison Ports in Europe.
“The best part of this job, which mixes technology (IT) with management (people), is that it changes all the time, and it’s fantastic to plan and implement these changes together with such talented people and a strong team.”
Smart ports: The story of ECT
Presentation: Smart ports: The story of ECT
As one of Europe’s leading and most technologically advanced container terminal operators, Hutchison Ports ECT Rotterdam (ECT) operates the ECT Delta terminal and the ECT Euromax terminal, both located in Rotterdam’s Maasvlakte industrial area, directly facing the North Sea.
ECT began making a name for itself in container handling when the very first container ship arrived in Europe back in 1966. The company always looks ahead and plans ahead to help its customers to further grow their business both at sea and on land, relying on its expert vision. Having overcome the barriers perceived by others and developed the Maasvlakte area into the leading centre of European container handling, ECT aims to remain ahead of the curve when it comes to embracing advances in technology that improve service and performance.
