High water levels cause rise in water level app usage

15% more downloads of ICT Group’s new smartphone app Heavy rainfall and high water levels in the rivers and creeks in Limburg (the Netherlands) have created a boost in the usage of the Water Level Limburg app during the last couple of weeks. The app and the related website, which were launched in February 2016, currently have nearly 5,000 users and the app is downloaded 15% more often compared to the previous period. The ‘Roer en Overmaas’ and the ‘Peel en Maasvallei’ water boards, which commissioned the development of the app by ICT Group, have observed on social media that people frequently use the app. Both Limburg-based water boards are happy with the number of users. ‘’It shows that we have addressed a need for information from citizens as well as businesses,’’ says Christel Verstappen, project manager Limburg Water Level app (Water board Roer en Overmaas). The Limburg Water Level app is the first online platform in the Netherlands that provides a simple way of checking the actual water levels in Limburg. Erwin Krijnen, Project Manager Cloud Solutions at ICT explains: “The app combines data from all monitoring stations in the creeks and the river Maas in Limburg, and uses color codes to show whether the situation is normal or whether there is (a risk of) flooding”.

New standard

The success of the app has also been noticed by other water boards. “Particularly the insight into the actual condition of creeks and rivers provides added value for water managers. As a result, it appears that we have set a new standard. What’s more, we accomplished this within a timeframe of a mere six months, and we are very proud of this”.


ICT Group built the app using Smartportal, a cloud-based platform that was developed in-house. Low Car Diet challenge succesful

In the month of April 22 ICT employees (18 from Eindhoven and 4 from Barendrecht) competed in the Low Car Diet. Hollands biggest sustainable mobility contest between companies and co-workers. With high-speed e-bikes, electrical cars and more frequent use of public transport the participants competed with each other to achieve as many sustainable miles as possible. On Thursday May 19 the finishing event was held at Eneco in Rotterdam and the winners were announced. The ICT employees were very successful and placed themselves as the runner up where savings in Euros were concerned. They accomplished a saving of 24,8 %. Apart from this ICT colleagues Oscar Reynhout and Sebastiaan Sorensen won two separate challenges. An overall price was won by colleague Johan van Uden.  His picture of a BBQ held at a FastNed charging station – with the comment ‘what to do when charging’ – was awarded the best Social Media Moment in the contest. ICT Group Netherlands (ICT) and Stichting HIV Monitoring (SHM) sign an agreement.

ICT Group Netherlands (ICT) and Stichting HIV Monitoring (SHM) are pleased to announce the signing of an agreement for the replacement of SHM’s existing data entry system.

The new system is expected to increase the efficiency of data collection, streamline the quality control process and facilitate data analysis. The system is based on the LogicNets Medical Decision Framework.

SHM monitors HIV-positive individuals in care in the Netherlands. SHM has a nationwide team that gathers specific, anonymized data necessary to support the Dutch HIV treatment centers and drive important national and collaborative international research. SHM selected the LogicNets system because it is used by a range of healthcare and technology organizations as a platform through which they can cost-effectively capture their unique protocols and workflow rules. LogicNets is designed to integrate with external systems and incorporate its advanced processes into the larger organization workflow. LogicNets applications are delivered and supported in the Netherlands by LogicNets’ exclusive integration partner, ICT.

The decision to implement the LogicNets platform was made after intensive and solid research. One important criterion was SHM’s wish to be able to modulate protocols themselves, a feature that is standard within the LogicNets system. In addition, SHM sought a solution that is flexible and could easily be adapted to extend future data collection, potentially also covering additional disease areas.

SHM states: “LogicNets meets all our main requirements and gives us the opportunity to future-prove our data collection and quality control processes. We are looking forward to the cooperation with LogicNets and their partner ICT.”

ICT Group in Television program “Samen Sterk” on SBS6

On Saturday May 14 ICT will star in the SBS6 TV program “Samen Sterk”. The theme of the program is: “innovative medical developments”. Raymond Beijen en Nico van Oene explain on behalf of ICT in which way software commissioned by PALGA helps the pathologists in the Netherlands to standardize and improve their reporting. The program is presented by Dian Biemans. At first she speaks with Beijen and Van Oene about this innovative software solution based on LogicNets and afterwards she interviews pathologist Mari van Dijk to see how the system is used in the Elkerliek hospital in Helmond. PepsiCo chooses ICT as systemintegrator for project in Broek op Langedijk

For the establishment of PepsiCo in Broek op Langedijk, a production site for Smiths and Lays, ICT Group will integrate the control system for the drying oven in the control system of the existing extrusion line comprising an extruder and a flavor line. This drying oven is operated manually at the moment and will start working automatically after finishing this project. ICT is responsible for both hardware and software modifications (Siemens, Wonderware and recipes).

The purpose of PepsiCo with this project is to simplify the operation for the operators, by realizing centralization of this control from the recipe.

Small tip: use QueueBackgroundWorkItem for asynchronous work in ASP.NET

This is a small tip that I’m mainly publishing as a reminder to myself, but it could come in handy for someone else. Background processing tasks in ASP.NET are hard. At any time IIS could decide to recycle the application lifecycle. The usual solution is to farm out these tasks to a (Azure) queue and let some other machine (for example an Azure worker role) process that queue. However, with ASP.NET 4.5.2 Microsoft introduced the QueueBackgroundWorkItem method. This makes it possible to create small background processing tasks within the application lifecycle context. See the following (extremely simple) example:  

  • Caveats: A task started this way will only delay the recycling of the app pool for 30 seconds. So you need to complete your work within those 30 seconds. If not, the task will be killed.
  • You need ASP.NET 4.5.2.
