How do you improve internal logistics on two packaging departments?

FrieslandCampina: MES system for packaging line

FrieslandCampina in Leeuwarden produces long-life dairy products. FrieslandCampina in Beilen primarily produces baby food. In order to optimise the logistics in the packaging departments at both sites, FrieslandCampina commissioned implementation of a barcode system from ICT. ICT engineered and installed the BAS system. The BAS system receives order information from SAP, controls a number of printers, calculates the best-before date, checks whether the right order is set at the right time in parts of the line, receives signals associated with produced pallets and communicates production information to SAP. The system with the greatest functionality is installed in Leeuwarden. The BAS system is also deployed in the milk powder can factory where cans are produced. The incoming pallets are scanned in the packaging departments and the outgoing pallets are identified using barcodes. The forklift trucks are equipped with a forklift truck terminal and a scanner. The production lines include an applicator that automatically applies a barcode label. The benefits of the system for FrieslandCampina are simple tracking & tracing functionality, minimised pallet movements and fast, error-free stock transaction processing.
